Buying a car can be a daunting experience whether it's your first car or your tenth. There is an extra element of doubt that creeps in when you decide to purchase a used car because you can't be 100% sure of its condition and past treatment.
As a business, car dealers are stereotypically untrustworthy thanks to horror stories from family, friends or personal experience. However, there are dealerships that provide a fantastic service and stock genuinely good cars that you can buy with confidence.
If you're not willing to trust the dealer or private seller that has the car you want to buy, you can commission a vehicle inspection from the AA.
WHAT IS AN AA VEHICLE INSPECTION?
A vehicle inspection conducted by the AA is an independent and thorough pre-purchase inspection by an AA-approved engineer of a vehicle that you want to buy. It produces a detailed report on the condition and history of the car to help you decide if it's worth buying.
The AA (Automobile Association) is a motoring organisation founded in 1905 with millions of members throughout the UK. They are a trusted brand in the industry providing expert knowledge and advice on transport issues which is respected by the Government and safety experts.
You can choose to have either a Basic or Comprehensive inspection carried out. All vehicle inspections are visual and external checks and will not involve the inspector taking any item on the vehicle or any of its components apart.
In general, you can expect all of the following items to be checked. For a full list of what's covered by the Basic and Comprehensive AA vehicle inspections, click here.
- Body exterior
- Engine compartment
- Electrical controls
- Interior and luggage compartments
- Front and rear suspension
- Front and rear under frames
- Exhaust system
- Fuel system
- Wheels and tyres
IS AN AA VEHICLE INSPECTION WORTH THE MONEY?
The cost of an AA vehicle inspection depends on the vehicle's engine size, the level of inspection and whether you're an AA member or not. Basic inspections start from £128 for AA members (£142 for non-members) for cars up to eight years old and 1800cc. Comprehensive inspections start from £172 for AA members (£191 for non-members) for cars up to 1400cc and is available for vehicles up to 15 years old.
Buying a car is often one of the top three financial investments for the average British family behind buying a house. So, you want to make sure the one you're committing to is going to last for years to come with as few problems as possible.
Unless you have property or construction expertise, you wouldn't buy a house without a professional survey - and even then, you would still probably want a second opinion. So, if you have a limited knowledge of cars, it's advisable to have it inspected by a trained professional who will be able to flag up any potential problems and let you know whether it presents a good investment.
Whether an AA vehicle inspection is worth the money largely depends on you as a buyer. If you're confident in your ability to evaluate the condition of the car and you trust the dealer selling it, then having it inspected might be unnecessary. However, if you want some added reassurance and peace of mind that you're making the right decision, spending the money on an inspection could save you more money, time and stress in the long run.
