From 4th December learner drivers will have to be able to follow directions from a sat nav and drive into a parking space in order to pass their test.
They will also have to answer vehicle safety questions whilst driving and complete 20 minutes of independant driving rather than the current 10.
The Driving & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) said it wanted the test to have "more real life scenarios" such as driving into and reversing out of a parking space. It said they want the test to reflect the changing behaviours of drivers.
Reversing around a corner and other manoeuvers shall be replaced and examiners will test a driver's ability to use a sat nav instead of following road signs, in the new test.
The DVSA have said that increasing the time candidates had to drive independantly would allow the examiner to better asses their ability to drive safely on high risk roads. At the moment learner drivers spend a large part of their test time on low risk roads such as housing estates.
