How to keep children happy during long car journeys

Corner Park Garages, Swansea and Cardiff

Do you have a long car journey coming up with your young family? Perhaps you're visiting family members on the other side of the country or heading off on a big family holiday in a fleet of used cars. There is no need to dread this occasion: in fact, it could be a whole lot of fun. Just follow these five tips for a smooth and happy journey with your children.

1. Pack enough snacks

Most of the time, when kids get cranky on a long car journey, hunger is the cause. Bring plenty of fruit juice, fruit snacks, yogurt covered raisins and other healthy snacks that will slowly release energy. Try and avoid sugary drinks and sweets with lots of preservatives in them as the last thing that you want is something super sugary that will give your young passengers a spike of energy and hyperactivity followed by a grumpy slump.

2. Have some games that you can play in the car

From 'I spy' to storytelling games, you and your family can keep each other entertained for hours. If everyone is being too noisy, one game that you can play is 'who can stay silent for the longest', with a chocolate or other suitable prize awarded for the winner.

3. Plan your toilet breaks

If you are driving for more than a couple of hours, it is a good idea to plan a break so that everyone can stretch their legs and go to the bathroom. Give your kids some time to run around and shake off those car blues before they hop back into their seats for the next leg of the journey.

4. Take a scenic route

A good way to keep your family occupied is to look out for exciting landmarks along the way. If you are taking a very long journey, you could even stop off for the night or for an afternoon at a fun museum, park, or a child friendly show.

5. Give older kids a job

If you want to keep your children's attention focused, you can give older children a job, such as looking out for a particular landmark on the way or perhaps even learning to read a road map and looking out for road and city names.

Now you're ready to go

These tips will make it easy to enjoy a long journey in the car with children. If you are still looking for the perfect vehicle for your trip, take the opportunity to browse used cars now. You will be able to find something charming to take you from A to B in comfort and in style. It's time to hit the road!
